The Winery

SINCE 1682, A MEMORY OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF OUR WINE

340

years of history

The origin of Bodegas Góngora dates back to the Golden Age in which Seville was the Port of the Indies. At this time, the Catholic Kings drafted a Royal Alcabala forcing all ships that departed for America to carry a third of their load of products from the land. Many of those galleons fulfilled it by carrying wine.

It is at this time when Sir. José Góngora de Arando Góngora acquires the Hacienda “Pata de Hierro” (Iron Leg), named after a white horse that aroused the admiration of a descendant of the last Moorish king of Granada who was impressed by the strength of its legs and He commented to his footman: “Look at that horse, it seems that it has iron legs”.

Only one of those wine houses remains active. Such heroicity of standing before the passing of the centuries gives Bodegas Góngora the honor of being the second oldest winery in Spain.

Our facilities

Bodegas Góngora occupy an area of 10,000 square meters in the heart of Villanueva del Ariscal. All their barrels are made of American oak, most of them over 100 years old, which are distributed in the form of soleras and criaderas in the different existing wineries, such as “El 126”, “El Americano”, “Las 70” or “El Pata de Hierro”, reaching a storage capacity together with the deposits of 1,000,000 liters of wine.

These wineries still preserve the old 16th century press in perfect working condition, with its Spindle and Quintal Beam Press – “Prensa de Viga de Husillo y Quintal” (a huge wooden press 17 meters long and weighing 15,000 kg), which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with monument category by the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía. Nowadays, it is the only press of this type that remains in perfect working condition.
